The rural economy in Minnesota is struggling. Unemployment, low wages, and the lack of housing has put a strain on our district communities. These issues are not new and have been building for decades. Currently, Pine and Kanabec Counties have the lowest median household income in the state. And our unemployment rate is over double the statewide average of 4.3%. But I am optimistic. In recent years we have seen an in-migration of residents from the urban areas, seeking a simpler life. This has the potential to support positive economic change.
At the capitol, I will fight for funding for rural economic development and training to ensure a skilled workforce. Development must include local schools/colleges, state/local government support, businesses development partners, and representation from labor to help eliminate barriers and incentivize economic development. We must foster innovation and create employment opportunities with livable and sustainable compensation in order to develop a stronger middle class, which is the backbone of this great nation.
